The Peter Snowden trained three year old, Helmet, has been the big shortener in Cox Plate betting with Sportingbet Australia following his win the Guineas Prelude on Saturday.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Helmet had been well backed at $21 for the Cox Plate last week and had trimmed right up to $8.50 following his impressive display at Caulfield.

“We took a bet of $1400 at $20 and then another bet of $1400 at $15 last week and he was into third favourite at $8.50 such was the dominance of his win,” Sullivan said.

“He always looked the most likely of the three year olds to be a Cox Plate horse and the fact he looks to have sorted out a few of his problems is a massive plus.

“He has also shortened up to $3.40 second pick for the Caulfield just behind Smart Missile who is the $3.20 favourite.”

Sullivan said the other big addition to the top of Cox Plate markets was boom filly Atlantic Jewel who is now $11 despite not being nominated yet.

“She is clearly the best of the three year old fillies and is a raging $2.10 favourite for the Thousand Guineas,” Sullivan said.

“If she wins that, connections could well be tempted to go on to the Cox Plate despite the fact this is her first preparation.”

There has since been a betting plunge for Smart Missile:

Smart Missile has been subject of a huge Cox Plate betting plunge in the last week shortening from $15 to $10 at Sportingbet Australia following some mammoth bets including one to win over $200,000.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said a number of big bets were taken last week before his run in the Sir Rupert Clarke and punters had continued to back him heavily this week.

“We took two bets of $2000 at $15 last week but punters have really come heavily for him this week despite the fact he was a little disappointing on Saturday,” Sullivan said.

“We took one bet of $20,000 at $12 and he is now clearly our worst way for the Cox Plate after a number of punters secured $31 for good money back in August.”

Sullivan said a number of three year olds had been well backed for the Cox Plate this year with as there was no genuine weight for age superstar such as So You Think dominating the market.

“Away from Smart Missile we have also seen very good money for Helmet who has shortened from $21 to $7.50 following his win the Caulfield Guineas Prelude,” he said.

“Boom filly Atlantic Jewel is also well in the market at $11 following another dominant on the weekend and if she wins the Thousand Guineas, connections would surely be tempted to go on the Cox Plate with her too.”
