Caulfield Cup - Race 8
Looks like being just a moderate tempo. Tullamore probably leads inside Green Moon. Mighty High should find himself in the box seat. Southern Speed should get a perfect run sitting 1/1 in the run with December Draw just forward of midfield, while many of the other top chances will get back and need some luck of the slow tempo.
Southern Speed ($12.00) is a lightly raced mare on the minimum weight. She comes through the hot form-line of the Stocks Stakes. Her jockey went a bit early in the Underwood and then she found the line really well in the Underwood. She looks great value at the odds. December Draw ($2.40) is a very short odds for a Caulfield Cup but is obviously going to be tough to beat. His run in the Turnbull was excellent, he maps well here and with the slow tempo and good draw he should get his chance to run out the distance.
Drunken Sailor ($26.00) was not right last year but has since had much better form in Europe, goes well with a freshen up and looks way over the odds. Lucas Cranach ($9.00) is a winning chance on best form, but he's under an injury cloud and needs to pass a vet examination on Friday. Hawk Island ($21.00) sat wide in the Metropolitan but found the line well. Saptapadi ($26.00) was never on the track last week and on his Euro form has to be a place chance. Tullamore ($17.00) was held up and blocked last start and can definitely win on his Brisbane Cup win where he defeated Glass Harmonium. Green Moon ($13.00) races forward and was strong in winning the Newcastle Cup.
Norman Robinson Stakes - Race 4
Many of these horses are on the way to the Derby but have different form-lines. Niagara ($6.00) scored a super win last time and looks an emerging stayer on the up. Kiwi Sangster ($4.60) produced his best run in the Spring Champion when ridden quietly and is drawn to get a nice run here. Sabrage ($9.00) found the line well when he raced in blinkers for the first time and grabbed third in the Stutt Stakes. Rough chance to Vatuvei ($12.00) and nice odds. He was unsuited by the Flemington bias last time and will be looking for the 2000m now.
Tristarc Stakes - Race 9
Very strong Group Two mares race. More Joyous ($2.15) looks beautifully placed under these conditions. She's won second up in her last four campaigns and is a five time Group One winner. She looks extremely hard to beat. Sister Madly ($3.80) is the obvious danger, she maps well and beat More Joyous in the Manikato where she was probably suited by the on-pace bias. She's been flying for her new stable and the Quinella with More Joyous looks a good bet.
Improving mare Born To Rock ($10.00) is disadvantaged by the race conditions but will go forward and looks capable of running a good race. Sistine Angel ($15.00) ran well when second off a very long break. She'll be giving the better types a start here, but will run on and find the line late.
