Caulfield Race 5 – Futurity Stakes
A few top horses have skipped this event under the assumption Black Caviar would contest the race, and now she’s out, it looks very winnable for King Mufhasa ($2.50). He gets a positive jockey change with Nash Rawiller to ride and he should get a beautiful position either just outside the leader Danzylum in a moderate tempo or take a trail behind. He won the Toorak at this track and is a genuine Weight For Age performer. Pinker Pinker ($3.80) is the Cox Plate winner resuming but she’s awkwardly drawn inside and will need to have come back at her very best to win this first up. Craig Williams might need to use her up early to ensure he doesn’t get too far back off the slow pace. Place chances to Playing God ($5.50) and Wall Street ($7.50) who is having his first run for new trainer Mike Moroney.
Caulfield Race 6 – Oakleigh Plate
Expect Bel Sprinter ($2.90) to start a deserved favourite. He’s a very exciting talent on the way up. He’s ideally drawn to sit midfield with a genuine tempo and is capable of reeling off brilliant sectionals. In his first attempt at this level, he looks to have a great winning chance. Sepoy ($3.10) is unbeaten in Melbourne and is the class runner, however he does look vulnerable carrying 58kg as a 3yo. It looks a big ask and expect he’ll need to do plenty of work from his wide barrier. Other good hopes are with Curtana ($13.00) who has a good record at this track and distance and is 3.5kg better off at the weights when only a length from Sepoy here in the spring. African Pulse ($16.00) is a lightly raced three year old who looks untapped. He’s well in on the limit and three years olds have a good record in this race.
Caulfield Race 7 – Blue Diamond Stakes
Expect the fillies to dominate this years’ edition of the Diamond. Samaready ($2.00) looks very hard to beat and no surprise to see her start odds on. She was dominant last start, running a very fast time and significantly quicker than the colts and even quicker than the open horses (Eagle Falls). She’s drawn perfectly and could win this convincingly. The colts don’t look capable of giving her 2kg and beating her, so expect fillies to fill all placings. Formidable ($15.00) looks well drawn, while Members Joy ($19.00) will race in blinkers for the first time. Another filly, Armed For Action ($14.00) will attract attention, she’s unbeaten and has been impressive. Craig Williams jumps aboard, which will do her no harm.
Rosehill Race 6 – Apollo Stakes
Rain Affair ($1.50) is the standout again here. He’s won nine out of his ten races and bolted in last start against a similar field. This is his first attempt at 1400m but should be a concern. Only challenge for him might be a firm, drying track. Shoot Out ($9.00) ran on well behind Rain Affair last time in his first run for Chris Waller. He’s being trained more as a miler now with his Grand Final being the Doncaster, but he’ll be competitive here. Trusting ($11.00) has been trialling well and will run nicely first up. Centennial Park ($15.00) is worth considering for the exotics. He’s suited at 1400m and loves Rosehill.
