    Olympic Games 2016

What's in store for betting on the Olympic Games? It's coming up quickly.

There are a few markets floating around at the moment, but I expect a lot more will become available closer to the start of the Games.

The Olympics can be very rewarding from a betting perspective if you put in the research. I tend to not look for huge underdogs, but for people who have dominated their discipline in the year leading up to the event. Injuries can throw a spanner into the works, so make sure there are no news items regarding injuries for the main players. I also tend to focus on events where luck plays less of a role. The type of sports I like are shot put, rowing, high jump, long jump, javelin throw, individual pursuit in track cycling, etc. Basically, events where you don't have to worry about another athlete (quite literally) tripping up the favourite. Also, unless I find good reason to do so otherwise, I tend to always back the USA to win the men's and women's basketball!

Total medal tally betting is interesting, because the best models for predicting them don't actually pay any attention to individual athletes. They are typically made by economists who focus on population, GDP, etc. Leading up to the start of the Games there will be numerous predictions published by academics with good track records for their previous predictions.

In terms of where to bet, I can't yet comment on 2016, but in Olympics gone by Betfair has been one of my favourite places because they have offered markets on a greater range of events than traditional bookmakers.

    Sports Illustrated:

The two lists do vary in results from one another, but each are based on competitor form leading up to the Olympics.

I really surprised Novak Djokovic is out of the tournament after 1st round game against Del Potro.

Carmelo Anthony passes Michael Jordan for third on U.S. Olympic scoring list.
Another record for Melo in Rio. Let's wait for one more record from Anthony!

Carmelo Anthony is closing in to another crazy record in USA national team in Olympics. He scored 31 points in game against Australia, and that match was the best in this tournament at the moment.

For anyone betting on the over/under gold medals and total medals markets, keep an eye on the fact that some nations like New Zealand and Great Britain typically start slowly before events that they're strong at commence later in the competition. For example New Zealand's six golds in 2012 came from rowing, sailing, athletics and canoeing (racing, not slalom) - events that have either only just started or haven't yet commenced in 2016.

Great Britain, for example, are actually ahead of their total medal tally at the same stage in London. For this reason there may be value in taking the overs, which have been dropping since the Olympics began.

I could not believe the US basketball team. They just bring with them a luxury ship for them to stay while competing in the Olympics. But over all I like what's going on with the Olympics haven't made my bet yet because it's to early for me to do so.

I think Great Britain would finish better this Olympics. The Olympics just began and they are doing good compare in 2012. My prediction they would finish in 3rd or 4th spot (Japan is trailing behind) this Rio 2016

Did it surprise you with the medal tally. China might send a troop of athletes but nothing beats the all mighty United States. Great Britain has been doing a wonderful job at the Olympics they are 2nd in the medal tally.

He has won another gold with US, but i guess that was last Olympics in his career. Anthony's only dream is NBA title, surely
