    Doncaster Mile Preview

The following preview is courtesy of Gerard Twomey from IASbet.

Randwick - Race 7 - BMW Doncaster Mile

With a heavy track virtually guaranteed for Randwick on Saturday, punters should be looking at fit horses down in the weights for the winner of this year’s Doncaster renewal. The tempo should only be moderate with Fast Clip ($31) finding the front from Niagara ($8.50), More Joyous ($6) and Centennial Park ($81).

Three year olds have an excellent record in this race, having won 6 of the last 13 editions, as well as Whobegotyou being a tragedy beaten behind Vision and Power in 2009. The Waterhouse trained Niagara is the only three year old competing this year, he has returned a bigger stronger colt this preparation - as evidenced by his demolition of the Ajax Stakes field. He reportedly didn’t handle the seven day back up when unplaced in the George Ryder. He should sit outside the leader and appears good value at double figure odds.

Current favorites More Joyous and Secret Admirer ($7) face tasks. More Joyous is not as well suited under handicap conditions as she is at weight for age, and from barrier 22 Secret Admirer will have to come from last in her quest to complete the Epsom Doncaster Double in the same racing season.

Hurtle Myrtle ($10) brings the same profile as last year’s winner Sacred Choice, having won the Group One Myer Classic on Derby Day on a soft track and Matthew Smith is sure to have her peaking third up. If the track is a bog, last year’s Oaks winner Absolutely ($21) could be suited on the seven day back up. Of the higher weighted gallopers Shoot Out ($7.50) is racing in top form for his new stable and with the blinkers going back on is sure to be finding the line late. Sincero ($8) is ready to peak at his third run back, however barrier 6 may be no luxury for this long striding galloper as Craig Williams will be trying to get him to the outside in the straight. Wall Street ($21) has improved at each of his three runs for new trainer Mike Moroney, has the blinkers going back on, is a specialist at 1600m and has handled the heavy in New Zealand. Tough race! No wonder it is $6 the field.

Punters are betting wide and eating up the value in the Doncaster Mile with Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan reporting money arriving for half the field.

Sullivan said More Joyous had been the best backed shortening from $7.00 to $5.50 in the past 24 hours but punters certainly didn’t think the race ended with her.

“Of the horses in the market, there has been really good money for More Joyous, Secret Admirer, Sincero and Hurtle Myrtle,” Sullivan said.

“There has also been money for horse at bigger odds with Wall Street, Monton, Happy Zero and Absolutely all shortening up from odds over $21.”

“Obviously the wet track has played a part with punters looking for value with those with slow and heavy form but it also a sign of just how open this race is.

“The Doncaster is always a fairly open affair but this is one of the most even fields I can remember.”

Sullivan said there had been little money for the one odds on chance on Saturday’s Randwick card with Streama very easy at $1.70 in the Oaks.

“We have been sitting top odds Streama all week at $1.70 but at this stage punters have been reluctant to back her,” he said.

“I am sure punters will step in at some stage as she has a clear class edge but she may get out a little more in the market before that happens.”
