Weekend racing preview with picks - Sept 1st

The following comments are from Neil Evans at Luxbet.

Plotting the three-year-old Spring riches will surely be one piece of the puzzle at a time, but make no mistake, the next couple of months will be dominated by Sydney’s crop!

That said, like an ominous shadow stalking a new season, the unbeaten star of the 2YO year and Golden Slipper winner Pierro returns to Rosehill this Saturday in a virtual match race with the hulking challenger All Too Hard in the Group 3 “stepping-stone” Run To The Rose. It’s almost a middleweight spar between Hagler and Leonard for early bragging rights. But punters’ eyes will occasionally drift elsewhere, especially on the resuming Epaulette and Your Song, both very forward!

And before the Melbourne carnival really takes over, we’ll get an important insight on a firm track into the Sydney staying stocks in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m), wit h the super consistent Stout Hearted and another more recent import Glencadam Gold dominating the market. Punters will not only want the winner, but some significant pointers to longer races, especially with talented stayers like Permit and Nextanix being aimed at longer journeys.

The track at Caulfield should be in near perfect order around a Dead 4, but with the rail out 6m for the entire, expect most of the early action to be up near the speed before the back-markers start to work into the money later in the day!

Here a snap-shot of how I see Super Saturday:

MY MEMSIE STAKES TIP: GREEN MOON: Several chances in a very open race, but Green Moon is versatile and tough, and a two-time first-up winner. Last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up who won the Blamey over a mile fresh in the Autumn, and can sit midfield here before powering home from the 600m!

MY BEST BET: KABAYAN (Caulfield R4): Group 1- placed in the early Brisbane winter over the mile behind a very smart horse, and looked very strong in a recent trial. Love the placement here first-up over the right trip, and expect him to motor home!

MY BEST VALUE: COUP AY TEE (Caulfield R3): Won two back in a slightly weaker grade, but carries 3kgs less here, and is suited over the 1300m trip. Importantly, drawn to stay off the fence and out of trouble!

BEST LAY: GANGSTER’S CHOICE (Rosehill R4): Strong winner when resuming, but this is considerably tougher. Not so well treated here under the conditions, and has to overcome a wide gate. Under the odds!

BEST BACKED ON LUXBET: PIERRO (Rosehill R5): Resuming unbeaten juvenile star from the Autumn that has been heavily backed at every call from an opening $2.25 into $2.00 and will jump shorter. In fact, had to double check All Too Hard was still in the race!

    NEIL'S CAULFIELD CRACKERS

R3: 4. ANISE: Can be a wallet-killer, but generally produces her best run fresh over the shorter course. With good speed on here and drawn away from the fence, she can settle back and then power down the middle at a good price.

R4: 5. KABAYAN: Sent straight to Melbourne, and looks very well placed first-up after a strong trial in open company. Group 1-placed over a mile in Brisbane behind a real star, so this trip looks perfect to storm home over the top.

    NEIL’S ROSEHILL RUMBLERS

R3: 6. COUP AY TEE: Was a dominant winner two runs back when ridden much quieter in slightly weaker race, but carries 3kgs less here and is nicely placed. Don’t be concerned by the wide gate, he races best outside horses when given plenty of room.

R5: 2. ALL TOO HARD: I’m going against the huge support for Pierro. Terrific run first-up in slowly run affair, and his only other seco nd-up start produced a brilliant 4len win in the Group 2 VRC Sires. Gets all the cover in behind, and saved for one giant run.

R6: 10. GLENCADEM GOLD: Former UK stayer who had two impressive trials before tough midweek win over 1550m with 57kgs. His second-up form suggests he’ll train on beautifully for the slightly longer trip, and drops to luxury 54kgs from the inside gate where he can dictate the speed!

    NEIL’S EAGLE FARM FLYERS

R4: 2. LATIN NEWS: All his wins have come first-up, and he looked terrific in a recent Rosehill trial win. Don’t be turned off by his modest winning strike rate, having generally raced in much tougher company. His quality makes him one of the best bets anywhere in the country!

R5: 11. PURE PURRFECTION: Hit the line hard last start at this track when forced to go back from a wide gate. Better drawn here so can settled midfield, and beautifully placed on the limit weight t o power home at big odds!

R7: 4. EMOTICON: Had no luck first-up when drawn wide, but much better suited here up to 1400m with a senior rider on. Is forward enough, and will be getting home hard at massive odds!
