    The Ashes

New Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann has declared Australia can win the Ashes but not everyone is buying into Boof.

Since Mickey Arthur’s sacking, punters have piled into England for a series victory, and have slashed what were already short odds of $1.40, into an even skinnier quote of $1.35.

“We’ve taken double the amount of bets on England to win the series than what we have on Australia since Lehmann was announced as coach,” Sportingbet Australia spokesman Andrew Brown said.

“Punters have also backed England from $2.00 into $1.90 to win the 1st test since Arthur’s axing and we can hardly write a bet for Australia,” Brown said.

Australia has drifted from $3.80 to $4 to win the 1st test, with the option of a draw at odds of $3.25.

Australia is a $4.75 outsider to win the England Ashes series, while a drawn series is $7.50.

England’s odds of winning the series 5-0 have firmed from $11 into $9. England to win 3-1 or 4-0 are the favourite options at $7.50.

Punters are jumping on the Aussies to cause an upset in the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge with Australia firming from $3.75 into $3.60 in the past 24 hours.

“You could have got as much as $4.15 for Australia to win the first Test a month ago but since Darren Lehmann’s appointment as coach there has been plenty of support from punters and it keeps getting stronger,” Centrebet’s Michael Felgate said.

England remains favourite at $1.83 but has eased from $1.75 due to the money for Australia. A draw in the first test has drifted from $3.25 out to $4.10 with fine weather expected.

While punters are backing an upset in the first test, there is no such hope in overall Ashes betting. England is a $1.18 favourite to retain the Ashes with Australia $4.50 to regain them.

England is also a short priced favourite to win the Ashes series at home at $1.40 with Australia $4.50 and a drawn series $7.50. The favourite series score line is England 3–1 and England 4-0 at $7.50.

A longshot plunge has been launched on English batsman Joe Root to score the most series runs. Root has firmed from $26 into $11 in the last couple of days. Alastair Cook is favourite at $5.50 with Michael Clarke at $6.50.

England has been heavily backed to win the Ashes series over Australia after a nail-biting win in the first test.

“The punters were already on the Poms but we have had another wave of support for England this morning, they are now into $1.22 to win the series with Australia easing from $4.50 out to $8.50,” Centrebet’s Michael Felgate said.

“Australia looked unlucky to lose the first test but it would be a huge effort to come from behind and win the series on English soil.”

England will start clear favourites in the second test at Lord’s starting Thursday at $1.93 with Australia $3.80 and the draw $3.40.

“The Aussies only just failed at Trent Bridge so $3.80 could be value especially if Warner returns. We expect there will be strong support for Australia at the odds,” Felgate said.

With England already retaining the Ashes, Australia goes into tomorrow’s 4th Test aiming to restore some pride and the money says Australia can do it.

Opening at odds of $3.75, Australia has been backed into $3.40 with England a drifting favourite $2 out to $2.15 and the draw solid at $3.25.

Centrebet’s Ashes expert, former England Skipper Andrew Flintoff, says while the Aussies played well in the Third Test he expects England to defy the betting drift and smash them in the 4th Test.

“I think England will dominate this Test. I think England will pull it all together this time. The batters will make runs, the bowlers will bowl better and this will be England’s best performance,” Flintoff said.

Flintoff says punters should stick with Michael Clarke to make the most runs in Australia’s first innings at odds of $3.50 and is giving Jonathan Trott another chance to be the top English batsman at odds of $4.75.

    FREDDY FLINTOFF’S 4TH TEST TIPS

    England to win - $2.15
Most Runs 1st Inns Australia - $3.50 – Michael Clarke
Most Runs 1st Inns England - $4.75 – Jonathon Trott
Most Wickets 1st Inns Aust - $3.25 – Ryan Harris
Most Wickets 1st Inns Eng - $3.75 – Stuart Broad

    4TH ASHES TEST

    England $2.15
    Draw $3.25
    Australia $$3.40
