    Cox Plate

Punters appear to have forgiven Pierro as bookmakers continue to take a steady stream of cash for the Gai Waterhouse trained horse to win next Saturday’s Sportingbet Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Pierro has been the best backed runner over the past few days.

“We took a $5,000 bet on Pierro at $3.60 yesterday and there’s been plenty of other smaller four figure bets on him over the weekend,” Sullivan said.

“He may have gone down as a short priced favourite in the Guineas but punters are seeing the positives from that run and Pierro will likely shorten further by Saturday, particularly if he draws a good gate.”

Green Moon is a solid $4.40 second favourite ahead of Ocean Park at $5.50 and Proisir at $9.50.

Southern Speed has firmed from $51 into $21 after being withdrawn from the Caulfield Cup in favour of the Sportingbet Cox Plate.

Punters have zeroed in on Pierro as their selection to win Saturday’s Cox Plate with 50% of all bets placed after the barrier draw with Sportingbet Australia being for the Gai Waterhouse trained colt.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Green Moon is the only other one punters have been backing since the barrier draw.

“Pierro and Green Moon have accounted for 75% of all the bets we’ve written since the barrier draw,” Sullivan said.

“Both of them should enjoy lovely runs from their gates and the punters must be aware barriers 5 to 7 have provided the winner of 8 of the last 10 Cox Plates,” Sullivan said.

“But I’m more than happy to take Pierro on because it had an absolute gut buster last start.”

“They can queue up and back him with me all week.”

Waterhouse’s other 3yo, Proisir, has been rock solid in betting at $9 but More Joyous has drifted from $10 out to $13 after gate 11 was selected for Sydney’s champion mare.

“It seemed like a strange choice but Gai knows her horses better than anyone,” Sullivan said.

The following comments are courtesy of the traders at IASbet:

The speed here is totally dependent on Glass Harmonium ($51.00) jumping away ok. If he begins well, will take up the lead from the Waterhouse trio of More Joyous ($9.00), Proisir ($8.50) and Pierro ($3.80). If he misses the start, as is his way, then More Joyous will find a soft lead from her two stablemates. Shoot Out ($21.00) should position himself fairly handy on the fence, and Green Moon ($5.00) will trail Pierro in a mid field position. Pierro had a hard run in the Caulfield Guineas, but if he’s taken no harm from that he reads the winner.

More Joyous appears to be well over the odds. She was disadvantaged in the Toorak under handicap conditions, but is ideally suited here under weight for age condtions. She’ll get a soft lead or sit second in the run, and at her current quote represents terrific value.

Green Moon is the up and comer, improving at every start this preparation. Should trail Pierro. He is yet to perform at Group One level, but gets his chance in this race en route to the Melbourne Cup. Shoot Out has drawn well. He has performed at this level and is a definite each way chance at odds.

Ocean Park ($7.00) has to improve again for this. Whilst he is up to this level, only two 4 year olds have won this race – Saintly and So You Think, so he must stamp himself amongst illustrious company.

Looking at the other 3 year olds, All Too Hard ($9.00) had everything in his favour at Caulfield, well suited by the fast pace. But he still took all his time to run down Pierro. Probably not so well suited here with the likely slower tempo. Proisir looks to be an outstanding colt, but it is a big ask to win a Cox Plate in your first preparation. He has untapped potential, but more likely to stamp himself in the Autumn.

Bookmakers have taken an avalanche of money for the Gai Waterhouse trained More Joyous to win today’s Sportingbet Cox Plate.

“We’ve written a bet of $40,000 at $11 and another $10,000 at $7.50 and she’s now a $7 fourth favourite,” Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said.

“More Joyous was $10 out to $13 when Gai chose gate 11 for her on Tuesday but since then the punters have crunched her.”

“The way things are going, she could challenge for favouritism tomorrow!”

Sportingbet Australia has also taken a $10,000 bet on Pierro at $4.60 and $14,000 on Green Moon at $5.

    Sportingbet Cox Plate Market:
    Pierro $4.60
    Green Moon $5.00
    Ocean Park $6.50
    More Joyous $7.00
    Proisir $9.50
    All too Hard $10
    Shoot Out $18
    Ethiopia $19
    Others $20 and over
