I was given the book On The Edge by Nate Silver for Christmas by my wife who knows that I enjoy gambling and its concepts/theories. I was a little dubious but I have to say I'm about half way through and thoroughly enjoying it. It's quite poker-heavy to begin with but soon gets on to sports betting. Anyway, I thought it may be of interest to some of you if you like to read around the subject.

Thanks for that insight. I didn't realise that On The Edge covered sports betting, but that makes perfect sense given he founded FiveThirtyEight. I've now added it to my to do list.
If I can ever find the time, an author also on my radar is Andrew Mack. He has published some very technical books on stats and modelling for betting, like "Bayesian Sports Models in R" and "Statistical Sports Models in Excel". Has anyone read them?
