Below are a few comments on the race from the traders at IASbet:

Another quality field for the Cup and good tempo is expected with Glass Harmonium, Jukebox Jury and Mourayan all to go forward. Horses that appear to map well are Tullamore, At First Sight and Niwot, while many of those drawn out wide shouldn’t be too disadvantaged as they get back in the race.

Americain ($4.80) obviously has a winning chance. Last year he won arguably the strongest Melbourne Cup in the modern era but will need to repeat that performance again and carries an extra 3.5kg. Doesn’t look great value at the price but is clearly going well again, based on his strong win at Moonee Valley.

Jukebox Jury ($13.00) paid the penalty for his win in the Irish St Leger and looks weighted up to his very best here. Dunaden ($7.00) is attempting to emulate Americain’s dominant performance of last year, may well have beaten the handicapper and if he improves as much going from Geelong to Flemington as Americain did last year he will be the winner.

Glass Harmonium ($31.00) won the Group One Mackinnon on Saturday when rolling to the front. He may struggle to run a strong 3200m but will go forward again and probably set the race up for something else to win. Foxhunt ($31.00) has been very consistent in eight runs this preparation and is a trifecta chance.

Lucan Cranach ($12.00) is potentially the best horse in the race. He ran well in the Caulfield Cup but there were some injury concerns going into that. If he’s definitely overcome those concerns, he must be kept safe as he has a genuine winnings chance.

Mourayan ($15.00) has had the perfect Cup preparation, but did pull up slightly lame after his nice run in the Mackinnon on Saturday. Bar Plates will be fitted to him for the Cup which is a slight concern. Red Cadeaux ($31.00) will be hoping for some rain. He has good form in Europe behind Jukebox Jury and wouldn’t surprise to see him run into the trifecta.

Illo ($21.00) hasn’t had the typical Bart Cummings preparation, as Bart has only had limited time with the horse, but with his amazing record in the Cup, cannot rule out completely.

Lost In The Moment ($31.00) should have won the Goodwood Cup three starts back and was competitive in the Ebor. He is another international with claims. His stablemate, the lightly raced Modun ($26.00), is having his first start for Godolphin, and from all reports has been working well out at Werribee.

At First Sight ($13.00) had a setback prior to the Caulfield Cup but bounced back to his best with a strong run in the Bendigo Cup. He drops 5.5kg for this and will race well. The best roughie in the race might be Shamrocker ($51.00). She’s a Group One winner of the Australian Derby and was runner up in both the Melbourne and Sydney Oaks, so should be suited by the two miles.

Tullamore ($26.00) is a genuine stayer who should get the run of the race. Might lack the class of a few of these but is tough and sure to be very competitive.

Niwot ($12.00) is absolutely flying, he’s a Flemington specialist, and was a dominant winner on Saturday. When he ran the Ramsden over 3200m at Flemington back in May his time was very good. He’ll be suited by the tempo and with his light weight he might just be the right horse at the right time to win the Cup.
