Sydney Cup
This year's renewal of the Sydney Cup appears light on for genuine chances. The tempo should be better than average, with Solid Billing ($51.00) and Once Were Wild ($26.00) going forward from Drunken Sailor ($7.50) and Older Than Time ($7.50).
Niwot ($4.00) should find himself midfield on the fence with Permit trailing one pair further back. Niwot has had the perfect preparation leading up to this his ultimate goal. At both of his last two preparations he has peaked at his fifth run in. In May last year, fifth up he won the Andrew Ramsden Stakes at Flemington over the Sydney Cup distance in dominant fashion. And in the Spring fifth up he blitzed the field in a fast run high rating Lexus Stakes, and was sent out a $9.00 chance in the Melbourne Cup on the back of this performance. He has come back better than ever, being competitive in slowly run Group One weight for age races and appears primed to run the race of his life on Saturday. Pre-post favourite Permit ($3.60) is a rapidly improving young stayer for the Chris Waller stable who seems to have beaten the handicapper. His relaxed racing style suggests the 3200m will present no problems.
The Gai Waterhouse trained mare Older Than Time returned a career best rating when third in this race last year and appears on target to at least replicate that performance.
