The following is a press release from Sportingbet Australia:
BMW winner Cedarberg has heavily backed to win this year’s Cox Plate with one bet to win $250,000 struck with Sportingbet Australia.
The Pat Carey trained gelding has shortened from $101 to $41 and Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said he looked a genuine contender if aimed at the weight for age classic.
“We took one bet of $200,000 to $2000 each way and there has been plenty of smaller money for him as well,” Sullivan said.
“He is a weight for age winner at a mile and a half and with genuine weight for age performers looking thin on the ground this year, he is certainly a contender.
“I thought he might be aimed more at the Cups but he is an improving type and given the money placed on him, he has to respected.”
Sullivan said dual winner So You Think was still joint favourite at $10 for the race alongside Whobegotyou despite the fact he was now trained in Ireland by Aidan O’Brien.
“If So You Think returns for a crack at a third Cox Plate, there is no doubt he would run a clear favourite but it is hard to be sure what his plans are,” he said.
“Whobegotyou is the obvious heir apparent otherwise after finishing third last year with 2nd place getter, Zipping, having been retired.
“More Joyous is on the third line of betting at $12 but there are doubts whether she runs a genuine 2040m and then you go out to the star three year olds of last season in Jimmy Choux and Lights of Heaven who are unproven at weight for age against the older horses.”
