    2012 Australian Open

Punters have backed Adam Scott from $4.75 into $4.25 to win this week’s Australian Open at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney.

Sportingbet Australia spokesman Andrew Brown said Adam Scott’s odds to win the tournament could be closer to $3.75 by the time he tees off on Thursday if the stream of money is any indication.

“We’ve written more bets for Scott to win than any other player and there’s been a few solid four figure bets on him at $4.50,” Brown said.

“Geoff Ogilvy is also attracting plenty of interest at $15 and Robert Allenby has his supporters at $41.”

“Nick Cullen and Daniel Nisbet have also been playing really well on the Australian circuit this year and at $71 each they could be the blow outs,” Brown said.

Jake Higginbotton, who turned pro after winning the NZ Open two weeks ago, is also a $71 chance. Last week’s NSW PGA winner Matt Stieger is $101.

“It’s an extremely competitive field and it wouldn’t surprise me if a winner came from outside the top 10 in betting,” Brown said.

One Sportingbet Australia punter stands to collect $62,500 after placing a bet of $100 each way on Matthew Smith at odds of $501.

“To be honest, I don’t know a lot about him but the punter that’s backed him will be hoping we’ve all heard of him come Sunday afternoon,” Brown said.
